There comes a time in many people’s lives when they find that their elderly parents need better and more professional care than they can provide for them at home. It is at that point that they being searching for a proper facility where they can entrust their parents’ health in the hands of caring, experienced doctors and nurses. They expect that their parents will be treated with the utmost care and respect; little do they know about the behind-the-scenes activity that goes on in these facilities. News media and statistics show that there has been a recent rise in the abuse of elderly patients in old-age homes. There have been cases of poorly-trained workers exhibiting abuse and neglect toward their patients. This can cause much emotional stress, leading to premature death. There are many nursing homes and similar facilities that receive federal funds and therefore must comply with certain regulations and laws set by the government. As part of these laws, the government maps out exactly how patients should be treated, but many facilities do not seem to be obeying. Many doctors in these facilities are aware of the mistreatment of patients by fellow doctors or nurses, but fail to report them. Such occurrences have become very frequent especially since August 2008, when there were several trials concerning the inappropriate care of patients in nursing homes. There ought to be a monthly check-ups and inspections on all federal-approved nursing homes to ensure the safety of patients in these facilities. There should be a federal officer observing the premises at all times so employees will not even think of treating a patient poorly. The issue of the inappropriate treatment of patients of nursing homes must not be taken lightly, or else more of these crimes and possible premature deaths may continue.
