Several car accidents that occur on a monthly basis are due to teenage drivers’ lack of responsibility on the road. These accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers across the country. There are several explanations for this. Some include poor hazard detection due to lack of experience, risk taking due to overconfidence, not wearing seatbelts, common use of drugs and alcohol, as well as distraction. As young drivers, teenagers tend to overestimate their capabilities. They do not fully understand how dangerous the road can be, and therefore drive around just as they please. Statistic show that over 5,000 teens between the ages of 16 and 20 die due to fatal injuries caused by car accidents each year. Teenagers are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as are all drivers. Something must be done in order to stop this from happening. There must be a new law passed concerning the age and supervision that is required of new drivers. New drivers should be required to complete a given number of driving hours supervised by a licensed driver above the age of 21. If these restrictions and extra precautions are not made, more of these unfortunate accidents will occur.
