Homeless People
A big issue in New York today is the issue of homeless people. Walking down a street in New York City, one will find at least ten homeless people sitting on the curb or curled up in a corner begging for money. There should be more facilities for such people to turn to when they need help. Whether it be food, money, clothing, or shelter, these people could use whatever they can get. The government ought to pay more attention to this matter and come up with a better system that can keep people off the streets and in a safe environment.
Driving Age
Many teenagers do not take driving as seriously as they should. Teenage drivers tend to underestimate hazardous driving situations and are not as careful as they should be. Therefore, over 5,000 teens between the ages of 16 and 20 die due to fatal injuries caused by car accidents each year. Statistics show that teenagers are about 10% of the U.S. population, but account for 12% fatal car crashes. Due to this, the age that when can get a driver’s license should be raised. Once teenagers receive a little bit of freedom they abuse it and this results in very unfortunate consequences. If the driving age would be raised, drivers would have more practice before driving alone on the road and be more responsible.
Cops Obeying the Law
Although cops have the power to give tickets to people disobeying the law, there ought to be a system of making sure cops obey the law as well. Driving down the street watching the light turn red, one often sees a cop zoom by and pass through while other cars must stop and wait. Or while searching for a parking spot near Dunking Donuts, one sees a police car double parked and the policeman waiting on line to get his coffee. This is a common occurrence in New York City and it ought to be paid more attention to. If regular citizens must obey the rules, then cops should be required to set a good example and obey them as well. If a cop sees someone doing something wrong and is able to call them out on it, then when one sees a cop doing something wrong he should be able to do the same. There is no reason for cops to have the freedom to do as they please simply because they are in uniform.
