"Computer Crimes"
Computer crimes have increasingly been endangering the lives of millions Americans throughout the country. Often, these problems go unnoticed and are underreported. The top two computer crimes in the United States over the past few years are threats to children’s safety and identity theft. There has been a large range of the types of threats to children’s safety on the internet; from cyber bullying to child pornography. Statistics show that one in every five teenagers in the U.S. who use the internet on a regular basis claim that they have received unwanted sexual solicitation. Many parents are unaware of the “chats” that their children have with strangers on the internet. Although many internet providers enable the use parental controls, only 1/3 of American households are actively filtering and blocking certain sites for their kids. There has also been a large range of types of identity theft on the internet; from stealing credit cards numbers to social security numbers. Victims of such crimes spend much money and long hours trying to repair the damage these criminals have done. In addition, they tend to experience great psychological and social problems down the line. Statistics show that about ten million Americans a year are victims of identity theft. Stronger actions must be done to prevent these crimes for recurring. Americans should not be forced to live every day in fear that someone may steal their personal information and mess up their lives.
